Rare and spectacular. This portrait engraving of a lovely 19th century woman is framed in a gold shadowbox frame under glass which has been reverse painted to give the illusion of a tortoiseshell or textured leather mat accented by an oval mirror medallion with floral motif. The photos don’t show it, but the image is recessed (not against the glass), a true shadowbox. The colors are superb, rich but subtle at the same time–the photos simply don’t do it justice. A label on the back reads “This hand colored Art Gravure has been enriched by a skilled artist with delicate tints and colorings to help in the interpretation of the subject portrayed.” I’ve been unable to identify the subject or the artist. It’s possible that there is some identifying information under the black mat that is securing the engraving to the back of the frame–I haven’t taken it apart. Overall measurements are 19 3/116″ x 16 3/16″; the frame is 1.25″ thick. It’s in excellent preowned vintage condition; minor scuffs on the frame; original dust cover has a few torn places and has been reattached to the frame. There’s also some pencil writing on the label, as well as an area that has been scratched out. NOTE: a faint circle on the upper left of the portrait is a shadow. Beautiful as a focal above the mantel. This is a large heavy piece and will require special packaging.
