Vintage 24″ Victorian-Style Wall Display Shelf with Plate Groove

This wooden wall display shelf has a Victorian vibe, with design elements borrowed from the Eastlake furniture style of the 1870s – 1890s: lightly-incised carvings, spindles, a beaded edge, grooved brackets.  However, we believe this dates from the last quarter of the 20th century.  It’s well made from hardwood that could be cherry, mahogany, or walnut–it’s hard to tell; the finish is a medium brown with a satin finish.  The back board is a single piece of 3/4″ thick lumber from top to bottom, notched out on both sides (top and bottom) at 45-degree angles to accommodate a vertical piece on each side.  The top is a single board of the same thickness with a 16.5″ groove for plates.  The two grooved brackets are made from 1″ thick boards.  The spindles were turned from single pieces of wood and are surmounted by a rectangular-base pyramid accent.  The three visible edges of the shelf are covered with a beaded trim.  Very nice and heavy piece for display of special items.  Hooks could be added to the front for additional display or storage, perhaps in the mudroom or entryway.  Props not included.

NOTE: This piece came from an estate, and it was attached to the wall via two long screws inserted from the front, one on each side.  We are including the screws, but the hanging method will be determined by the specific mounting surface and will likely involve drywall sleeve anchors and a short screwdriver.  There are no hangers on the back of the shelf.  See dimensions and condition description below.  

APPROX. DIMENSIONS:   23.75″ side to side x 8 1/8″ front to back x 11″ top to bottom (measured in the center); weight before packing: about 7 lbs.

CONDITION: Very good preowned vintage condition; great color and warm patina.  There are minor scuffs consistent with age, as well as a split on each side of the back panel where it meets the two vertical pieces, just below the two mounting holes–see last photo.  The splits go all the way through but not all the way across.  Feel free to ask questions and/or request additional photos.
