Exceptional vintage box with brass fittings and interior mirror. The box is made of half-inch hardwood–perhaps walnut or mahogany. not sure–and features dovetail joints, with the front and back pieces dovetailing into the side pieces. All eight corners are encased in brass, and the front handle, hasp closures, latches and hinges are also made of brass. Inside, a mirror covers the entirety of the lid, which opens flat. I’m not sure what the original purpose of this box was, or if the mirror might be a later addition, but it’s beautifully constructed and in excellent used vintage condition, clean inside. There’s some shelf wear on the underside, but minimal as the brass corners keep the wood elevated. There are some blue areas on the back side of the mirror where it appears that the glue has broken down the silvering.  The box measures 10″ x 8″ x 4.5″ and weighs 3 lbs. 12 oz., nice and sturdy. This is a great shelf-styling piece or a unique desk or vanity accessory. I estimate that it dates from the mid-20th century.
