Vintage Print of John Haymson’s St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Charleston South Carolina

Lovely print of John Haymson’s “St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Charleston, South Carolina,” with new mat, unframed.  The original may have been a watercolor–the artist worked with a variety of media, including lithography, watercolor, etc. (see history below).  Beautiful muted colors, mostly shades of green.  Overall measurements are 17″ x 14″.  The classic architectural style of the subject makes this print a perfect accessory for an office, library or sitting room.  Excellent preowned vintage condition.  See photos and ask any questions before purchasing, as all sales are final.

HISTORY (from online sources): John Haymson (1902-1980) was an Austrian-born American painter and printmaker best known for his expressive depictions of street scenes and women.  Over the course of his expansive art career, Haymson worked with a variety of media, including lithography, watercolor, and oil paint.  He was accepted into the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 16.  After studying graphics in France and Germany in the 1930s, he started painting designs on silk for the textile industry. During WWII, John Haymson’s painting skills proved useful.  The artist did portraits of Nazi sympathizers and their families until visas came through, keeping him and his wife from being sent to a concentration camp.  After arriving in the United States, John Haymson’s paintings took on a new life.  He began doing detailed portraits and American cityscapes in watercolor, oils, and lithographs.  John Haymson’s prints of Emperor Maximillian of Mexico in 1968 are among his most recognized pieces.  Today, his artwork hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
