Exceptional heavy brass acanthus leaf (see below) candleholders with added etched glass gold-banded globes. The candleholders have a square base with tapered sides featuring a modified scroll motif topped by an inverted acanthus leaf capital. A smooth cylindrical column extends upward to the base of a second acanthus leaf capital topped by the drip pan which is fitted with flexible clips to hold the globes in place and the candle socket, which are smaller than standard, measuring .75″ and will require smaller diameter candles. The base measures 4.5″ square; overall height to the clips is about 13.5″; height with globe in place is 18.5″. The globes didn’t come with the candleholders, but they add so much style and presence and look like they were meant to be together. They have a delicate foliate design and three gold bands. They may be crystal, as they emit a very satisfying bell-like sound when tapped. Beautiful and elegant addition to the buffet or mantelpiece.

Acanthus (from online sources): People have treated acanthus as a sacred medicinal and healing plant since ancient times. In Mediterranean countries, it’s considered a symbol of enduring life and immortality. Ironically, in Christianity, the leaves of the acanthus plant represent the exact opposite—pain, sin, punishment, and death. The acanthus is also one of the most common plant forms to make foliage ornament and decoration in the architectural tradition emanating from Greece and Rome and extending throughout the centuries even into modern times.
