Vintage Wooden Box Souvenir from Italy St. Peter’s Square and Bay of Naples

Unique vintage wooden box with split lid embellished with cast metal plaques featuring iconic Italian scenes: St. Peter’s Square and Basilica and Bay of Naples.  Both plaques bear the artist’s initials on the lower right and “Rip [riproduzione] Vietata,” or “reproduction prohibited” on the lower left.  The plaques are very detailed and the plated metal has a mixed gold-color and silver-color finish.  The split lid opens in the middle to two separate compartments.  “Handles” on the lids are silver-color metal balls, which are also used as feet on the four corners of the underside.  The box is a good size for storage of desk accessories, such as paperclips, sticky notes, even pens and pencils.  Use for keepsakes, playing cards, or simply for decorative purposes.  We estimate the box dates from the 1950s to 1960s.  See dimensions and condition description below.  

APPROX. DIMENSIONS:   Overall: 9.5″ x 6 7/8″ x 3 1/8″  NOTE:  there’s a slight separation of the hinge from the box on the Bay of Naples side; therefore, this side is 3.25″ tall

CONDITION: Good used vintage condition.  The wood has a nice patina.  There are some old stains inside, but overall the interior is clean; no odors. There’s some wear on the metal plaques, including discoloration and a couple of nicks on the silver finish.   The Naples plaque isn’t perfectly aligned on the wooden lid.  Both metal plaques are very heavy and, over time, the hinge on the Naples side has sprung and become weak, causing the wood to split on one corner where a screw is missing and cannot be replaced.  There’s a visible repair along the edge; it appears delicate and the lid should be handled with care.  Due to the weight and weakness of the hinge, the lid opens wider than the other one.  See photos.  Priced accordingly.
