Vintage Turkish sacks used by the Anatolian nomadic tribes to store clothes, foodstuffs, and personal possessions. They are woven from wool, cotton and/or flax, and goat hair. The bright dyes come from plants, insects and minerals. These are technically “kilims,” not a rug but a flat woven fabric created on a loom, similar to a tapestry. The sacks are made from a single long woven piece, folded in half, hemmed at the top, and stitched together along the long edge to form the sack. The sides are reinforced with long decorative strips ending in braided cords; the strips are attached to a felted longer strip that is stitched to the sides of the sack, leaving open loops used to secure the sacks for transport. Once filled, the sacks are loaded in pairs onto camels, one sack on each side of the hump, and lashed together through the side loops with the attached braided cords. Colors are purple, black, red, yellow, white, and green; on one side there is an intricate traditional pattern and on the other narrow stripes, in the same colors but creating a completely different look. The sacks can be used as they are hung on the wall or draped on the back of a sofa or chair or on a coffee table. They can be unstitched, opened up, and used as floor rugs or runners, as well as hung on the wall. Or they can be made into floor or bench pillows. This sack has some machine stitching along the top hems; it’s likely this was done by an exporter as part of the cleaning and restoration process in preparation for selling overseas.
