Antique Watercolor Portrait of St. Agnes of Rome Former Property of the Junior Daughters of the King 16.5″ x 13.5″

$135.00

Antique watercolor portrait of St. Agnes of Rome.  It features St. Agnes with a palm frond and a lamb.  The original dust cover had a handwritten note reading “Property of the Junior Daughters of the King.”  See history below.  The piece is done in watercolor, a little puzzling at first due to the very saturated and opaque colors.  I’m told this effect can be achieved when watercolors are minimally diluted.  Pencil outlines are still visible in several areas–see photos.  She’s in an antique cream frame with dark gold details.  The paper the watercolor is on has been glued to a larger sheet of paper and “St. Agnes” with two “modified Greek fleury crosses” adopted by the Junior Daughters of the King as their symbol are done by hand at the bottom.  There is no mat.  The glass is original and has a bluish tint to it.  Please note that the photos were taken without the glass.  Beautiful addition to a girl’s room or collection of religious art.  See below for dimensions and condition.

HISTORY (from online sources): St. Agnes of Rome (ca. 291 – ca. 304) is a virgin martyr venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, Oriental Church, Oriental Orthodox Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church, as well as the Anglican Communion and Lutheran Churches.  She is, among other patronages, a patron saint of girls, chastity, virgins, victims of sex abuse, and gardeners.  Since the Middle Ages, St. Agnes has traditionally been depicted as a young girl with her long hair down, with a lamb, the symbol of both her virginal innocence and her name, and a sword (together with the palm branch, an attribute of her martyrdom). The lamb, which is agnus in Latin, is also the linguistic link to the traditional blessing of lambs: on the feast of St. Agnes (January 21st), two lambs are traditionally brought from the Trappist abbey of the Tre Fontane in Rome in order to be blessed by the Pope. In summer the lambs are shorn, and the wool is used to weave the pallia (ecclesiastical vestment) which the Pope gives on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul to the newly appointed metropolitan archbishops as a sign of his jurisdiction and their union with the pope.  This tradition of the blessing of the lambs has been known since the 16th century.

Junior Daughters of the King: The Order of the Daughters of the King® was founded in 1885 as an offshoot of Bible studies for women held by Maggie Franklin in New York.  It’s an order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church, churches in communion with it, or churches in the historic episcopate but not in communion with it. Our membership currently includes women in the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran (ELCA), and Roman Catholic churches.  The Junior Daughters of the King came to be when Mary Davenport formed the first chapter for girls in 1896.  By 1940 the, the Junior Daughters had grown all across the United States and reached even China and the Philippines.  At some point, the Order’s headquarters moved to Woodstock, Georgia.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
