A very special example of Victorian funeral art, this large framed memento mori under glass was presented in 1898 to Clara Wright by her father, James H. Wright, in remembrance of the death of Clara’s mother’s Elizabeth in 1891, who died at age 23. The piece consists of a commercially produced black and cream lithograph featuring a floral border framing a dove with a banner in its beak reading “Gone But Not Forgotten.” The dove hovers above an artistic representation of a funeral monument surmounted by a wreath of lilies and roses encircling an hourglass, a traditional symbol of the fleeting nature of life. Tassels and scrolls adorn the monument. The lithograph includes two “windows” into which the personal details of the deceased and recipient, as well as a poem, printed in gold letters were inserted. The lower left corner includes the lithograph’s copyright information: “Copyrighted & Published by T. W. Campbell, Elgin, Ill. 1892.” This will make a wonderful addition to a collection of antique funeral memorabilia. See below for text, dimensions and condition.

TEXT: The top “window” reads: “In loving remembrance of our dear mother, Elizabeth Wright, died Sept 2, 1891, aged 23 years, 4 months, 12 days. Presented to Clara Wright by her father, James H. Wright, on Feb 1 ’98.” The second “window” features a poem: “Death our dearest ties can sever, Take our loved ones from our side, Bear them from our homes forever, O’er the dark, cold river’s tide. In that happy land we will meet them, With those loved and gone before, And again with joy we’ll greet them, There where parting is no more.” Beautiful and heartbreaking.

CONDITION: Excellent preowned antique condition; the gesso-on-wood frame has a couple of touched-up areas along the edges that are virtually invisible. The actual lithograph has a few small holes in the upper right corner, where the wooden backing can be seen, and there are a few worn areas on the dove’s body–again, not very noticeable. The glass is intact and the original wooden backing (with knot holes) is present–use zoom to view. Ready to hang; the wire is newer.
