Vintage original satirical etching by Kurt Hilscher (see history below), ca. 1920s – 1930s, signed and framed. The etching is entitled “Alt-Deutsch” (a tongue-in-cheek abbreviation for “Althochdeutsche,” or “old high German”). It depicts a luminous courting couple in Baroque-period-style finery against a dark backdrop of medieval-style buildings. He attempts to win her favor but she hesitates, while a shady character hovers behind and appears to plant a kiss on her bare shoulder. Lots of details in the clothing, facial expressions, plants and flowers at their feet, and architecture in the background. The etching has been professionally reframed in its original repainted frame with new acid-free mat and backing. There’s a metal hanger at the top of the frame, but it can be replaced with wire, if so desired. Signature, title and “original radierung” [“etching”] along the bottom in pencil. HISTORY (from online sources): Kurt Hilscher (1904–1980) was a German illustrator and advertising designer. Between 1924 and 1926, Hilscher studied in Dresden and Munich. He lived in Paris from 1927 to 1934 where he was influenced by the work of Ludwig Hohlwein, Jean Carlu, Ch. Loupot, P. Colin, and AM Cassandre. Between 1925 and 1975 he produced attractive etchings and Art Deco style graphics, creating a large number of posters, advertisements, brochures, and magazine and book covers, as well as packaging for many industries, including the theater and cosmetics. His imagery has a satirical bent, as well as having drawn inspiration from circus and burlesque performers.
