Vintage pair of distressed plaster bookends featuring minimalist Renaissance-style female portrait busts. The bookends have a brown stain finish which has degraded over time, on one more than the other. The facial features and overall style remind me of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Woman with an Ermine”: the almond-shaped eyes, pursed lips, thin eyebrows, hair parted in the middle and styled close to the face (see second image). I’ve been unable to find any others like them and it’s difficult to date them. Condition and very old felt bottom indicate they have a good bit of age. Regardless, they are unique and certainly a conversation piece. Fantastic addition to the eclectic library or used as sculptures for shelf styling. See below for dimensions and condition.Â

APPROX. DIMENSIONS: 9.5″ tall x 5″ wide x 4.25″ deep – weight varies from one to the other: 2 lbs. 13 oz. and 2 lbs. 11 oz.
CONDITION: As mentioned, the bookends have a distressed finish acquired over time; one shows more wear than the other and tends to flake a bit when handled. They could be sprayed with a clear polyurethane if so desired. One of the bookends has a repair in the upper right corner and a chip in the bottom rear corner; neither is readily visible.
