These Italian vases likely date from the mid-1900s. They are made from a pale reddish clay, typically used in Italian Majolica. The colors–particularly the blue and yellow–are in keeping with so-called “Della Robbia” religious wall plaques seen on old Italian doorways and more recently sold as souvenirs. The paint and glaze are thinly applied and due to the soft nature of the clay there are imperfections and nicks throughout for a rustic look but no major chips and no cracks. One of the vases has an unglazed “drip” inside and reddish spots that appear to be original to the manufacture–see photos. Having been handcrafted, they show slight variations to the measurements by a few small fractions of an inch. The tallest of the two is 6-7/8″ tall x 4-3/8″ at the rim x 3.75″ at the foot. Great addition to rustic Mediterranean-style decor.
