Rare Antique Book The Grandeur That Was Rome by J C Stobart 1913

$68.00

This book, THE GRANDEUR THAT WAS ROME, is one of two scholarly tomes written by J. C. Stobart, M.A. (see history below), the second one being THE GLORY THAT WAS GREECE.ย  This book was published by J. B. Lippincott Company, London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd., and printed by Ballantyne & Company, Ltd., at the Ballantyne Press, Tavistock Street, Covent Garden, London, in 1913.ย  It’s a 352-page hardback book with two-tone purple cloth covers, gold egg-and-dart accents, and a gold medallion on the front cover featuring the head of Germanicus.ย  Pages are deckled on the right and bottom and gilded at the top.ย  The book is lavishly illustrated with maps, photographs of Roman art, architecture, artifacts, and ruins, as well as line drawings.ย  It also includes a chronology starting with the foundation of Rome in 753 BC.ย  The print is surprising large for a book this age.ย  I believe this is a first edition, although not identified as such, and rare.ย  The book measures 10-5/8″ x 7.75″ x 2.25″ and weighs 4 lbs. 4 oz.ย  It’s in good antique condition (from visual observation, not an official book grade).ย  The spine covering has faded from purple to a taupe color and is frayed and fragile, both at the top and bottom; the stitched binding is cracked in several places, but all the pages are attached; the back cover has a 1″ split along the top edge–see photos.ย  Great addition to a collection of books of ancient history–more than just decor, it’s a fascinating read.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources):ย ย John Clarke Stobart (1878 โ€“ 1933), commonly known as J. C. Stobart, wrote two famous and influential books, The Glory that was Greece and The Grandeur that was Rome.ย  He was also a classical scholar, a University of Cambridge lecturer, an HM Inspector of Schools and the BBC’s first Director of Education. ย Stobart’s books were successful, partly because they combined popular with scholarly approaches and partly because of the photographic illustrations. ย He wrote in a Preface: “The pictures are an integral part of my scheme. ย It is not possible with Rome, as it was with Greece, to let pictures and statues take the place of wars and treaties. ย Wars and treaties are an essential part of the Grandeur of Rome . . . the pictures are chosen so that the reader’s eye may be able to gather its own impression of the Roman genius.”

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
