Vintage 1967 Portrait Busts of Maria Innocentia Hümmel by Gerhard Skrobek Made in West Germany

$125.00

Vintage bisque portrait busts of sister Maria Innocentia Hümmel designed by Gerhard Skrobek and issued in 1967 (see history below).  The busts are finely detailed, with incised “Skrobek 1967” on the back and “M. I. Hümmel” in front.  They are stamped underneath with the Goebel “bee” mark (hümmel means bumblebee in German) used between 1960 and 1972.  Incised are “1967” and “Hu2.”  Hu1 was a 13″ piece usually given to dealers, and it’s very rare.  Hu3 is a colored version of Hu2.  The busts have a very subtle satin pearlized finish.  They were sourced from an estate and are in exceptional preowned vintage condition with no damage.  They would make great bookends (use with care, as they are lightweight) or striking shelf-styling pieces.  They measure about 6″ tall x 4-7/8″ wide x 3.25″ deep.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources): Maria Innocentia Hümmel OSF (born Berta Hümmel, 1909 – 1946) was a German religious sister of the Order of St. Francis and an artist. Upon completing her art studies with top honors in 1931, she chose to follow a religious calling that she had felt for some time.  She applied and was admitted to the order of the Franciscan Sisters.  She is noted for her paintings which were the basis for Hümmel figurines produced by Goebel Porcelain Factory from the mid-1930s until 2008.  Her unique depiction of children (and incorporation of Jewish symbols in some of her works) drew the ire of the Nazi government which described the children as “hydrocephalic, club-footed goblins” and declared that “there is no place in the ranks of German artists for the likes of her.”  After the closure of the convent by the Nazis and the confinement of the sisters to a small area without heat (and with no means of support), M. I. Hümmel contracted tuberculosis from which she never recovered, dying just over a year after the war ended, at the age of 37.

Gerhard Skrobek (1922 – 2007) is best known as the premier artisan of Hümmel figurines since the Second World War.  He worked for the Goebel company in Rödental, Germany, between 1951 and 2002 and designed many of the figurines eagerly sought by collectors.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
