Moon and Stars Stoneware Ovenware by Watt Pottery in Desirable Pumpkin Orange

Product Information

Such a great find!  This stoneware bowl with lid is one of the earlier patterns (1920s-1930s) produced by the Watt Pottery Company of Crooksville, Ohio (history below).  This is the charming “Moon and Stars” pattern, featuring an incised new moon and stylized star, alternating with graduated vertical lines, very much in keeping with the simple designs of utilitarian pieces from the early 20th century.  The shape is very typical of the period, and the color is commonly referred to as “pumpkin orange,” although this may be a more recent appellation.  Our research suggests that earlier pieces of Watts pottery were unmarked.  Fantastic addition to the modern farmhouse or French-style kitchen, or a collection of antique stoneware.  See dimensions and condition description below.

DIMENSIONS:   5.75″ tall to the top of the lid x 7 3/8″ diameter at the rim x 4 3/8″ at the base.

CONDITION: Excellent used antique condition with less wear than its almost 100 years would indicate.  There are some “pitted” areas along the unglazed portion of the rim and a small chip on the underside of the lid’s lip.

SHIPPING: $12 flat rate shipping valid only for street addresses within contiguous United States; we cannot deliver to post office boxes.  For shipping to Alaska, Hawaii and elsewhere, please contact us with your location for a custom shipping quote.

HISTORY (from online sources): The company started in 1922 in Crooksville, Ohio, making stoneware jugs and crocks. Most of those pieces were marked with eagle or acorn marks in blue and the number of gallons held within a circle. The factory they used had been formerly known as the Burley Pottery Company.  As more homes got electricity and refrigeration, the company switched to ovenware, which was produced from a lighter clay and was strong enough to be taken from the icebox directly to the stove. The early ovenware was not marked, but in the early 1940s the words “oven ware,” “Made in the USA,” or simply the bowl size were added. Early patterns included solid colored pieces like Moon and Stars, Diamonds and Grooves, Arcs or Loops.  The years 1949 through 1953 were the company’s heyday, after the introduction of hand-painted kitchenware which would become popular with collectors. .The factory burned down in 1965, which makes Watt pottery even more collectible.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
