Vintage to antique satin uranium glass (see history below) covered dish lid (lid only) with silver overlay. Stunning delicate designs applied to the glass throughout. This lid (and its long-gone dish) likely dates from the early 1900s, possibly through the 1930s. It has an overall square shape divided into fourths with rounded corners. Each quadrant is separated by a fan-shape design surmounted by graduated teardrops. The corner medallions feature scrolls, tulips and other floral designs. I can’t imagine what the dish looked like. I found the lid at an estate sale and couldn’t leave it behind. So beautiful. It measures approx. 6.5″ x 6.5″ and is in excellent condition with no damage. The silver will likely polish to bright shine if that look is preferred. Display it on an easel near a window where light will shine through. Excellent preowned antique to vintage condition; no chips or cracks.

HISTORY (from online sources): Uranium glass is glass which has had uranium, usually in oxide diuranate form, added to a glass mix before melting for coloration. The proportion usually varies from trace levels to about 2% uranium by weight, although some 20th-century pieces were made with up to 25% uranium. Uranium glass can register above background radiation on a sufficiently sensitive Geiger counter, although most pieces of uranium glass are considered to be harmless and only negligibly radioactive. Following the Cold War, restrictions on uranium glass imposed during World War II in connection with the Manhattan Project were completely lifted. During this time many older pieces entered the free market and new pieces continued to be produced in small quantities into the 2000s.
