Antique French Language History Books by Jules Michelet History of France and History of the French Revolution Set of Six

$145.00

This listing is for a collection of six antique books by Jules Michelet (see history below): Volumes 6 and 11 of Histoire de France (originally published in 19 volumes) and Volumes 2, 4, 5, and 9 of Histoire de la Révolution Française (originally published in 9 volumes).  There is no copyright date within the books.  H. de France includes a Preface dated 1856 and H. de la Révolution includes a Preface dated 1868.  However, because these are “revised and expanded new editions,” we believe the preface dates refer to the original editions and the books offered here date from a few years later.  Based on our research, we believe they are from the last quarter of the 19th century.  They include numerous illustrations by Vierge and were published in Paris by Librairie Abel Pilon, A. le Vasseur, Successor, Editor, with typeface by Firmin Didot.  The books have red leather spines with gold lettering and marbled paper boards and endpapers.  All the books have an “ex libris” plate from a previous owner and a thin green bookmark.  There’s shelf wear, but less than age would indicate–see photos.  Pages are intact and free from tears and markings.  Inside the front cover of five of the books  there is tape residue where someone had the unfortunate idea of taping a price tag.  This collection is not only great for shelf styling but, for the reader of French, a panoramic look into the fascinating history of France.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources): Jules Michelet (1798 – 1874) was a French historian and writer. He is best known for his multivolume work Histoire de France (History of France), which traces the country’s history from the earliest times to the Revolution of 1789.  He is considered one of the founders of modern historiography.  Michelet abhorred the Middle Ages and celebrated their end as a radical transformation. He attempted to clarify how a lively Renaissance could originate from an ossified medieval culture.  In Histoire de France he coined the term Renaissance (meaning “rebirth” in French) as a period in Europe’s cultural history that represented a break from the Middle Ages, creating a modern understanding of humanity and its place in the world. (The term “rebirth” and its association with the Renaissance can be traced to a work published in 1550 by the Italian art historian Giorgio Vasari. Vasari used the term to describe the advent of a new manner of painting that began with the work of Giotto, as the “rebirth” [rinascita] of the arts.)  Michelet became the first historian to use and define the French translation of the term, Renaissance, to identify the period in Europe’s cultural history that followed the Middle Ages.  Historian François Furet wrote that Michelet’s Histoire de France remains “the cornerstone of all revolutionary historiography and is also a literary monument.”

During the tumultuous years between the abdication of Louis Philippe (1848) and the final establishment of Napoleon III as Emperor of France (1851), Michelet, unlike many other men of letters, did not attempt to enter active political life. He merely devoted himself more strenuously to his literary work. Besides continuing his great history, he undertook and carried out an enthusiastic Histoire de la Révolution Française, which was eventually published in 1868 in nine volumes.

At last, in 1867, the great work of his life, Histoire de France, was finished. In the usual edition it fills nineteen volumes. The first of these deals with the early history up to the death of Charlemagne, the second with the flourishing time of feudal France, the third with the thirteenth century, the fourth, fifth, and sixth volumes with the Hundred Years’ War, the seventh and eighth with the establishment of the royal power under Charles VII and Louis XI. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries have four volumes apiece, much of which is very distantly connected with French history proper, especially in the two volumes entitled Renaissance and Reforme. The last three volumes carry on the history of the eighteenth century to the outbreak of the Revolution.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
