Antique print of a view of Rome, Italy, taken from the Tiber with Castel Sant’Angelo on the right (see history below) and St. Peter’s Basilica in the background. A smaller black-and-white image of the same scene found online dates from 1906. This print may be older or slightly newer, but not much; without a date, it’s impossible to know for certain. It’s also difficult to tell what sort of print this is. There is no pixelation visible; it may be a photogravure or a collotype. The framing dates from the second half of the 20th century. The print has darkened over the decades and is more of a sepia tone, rather than black-and-white. It’s entitled “Roma” and was printed by “Frank & Co., Napoli.” I was unable to find any information about this printing house. Overall measurements are 21-7/8″ x 14.5″. The frame is black and gold with subtle red accents. Excellent preowned antique condition. Great addition to the gallery wall or a collection of Roman art. The pictured book, The Grandeur that Was Rome (1913), is being listed separately.

HISTORY (from online sources): Rich in history, Castel Sant’Angelo was originally built by the Roman emperor Hadrian on the right bank of the Tiber River as a mausoleum for himself and his family between 134 and 139 AD. The Pons Aelius leading to the mausoleum was also built by Hadrian. The popes later used the building as a fortress and a castle. Medici Pope Leo X built a chapel in the castle (15th – 16th centuries). A bronze statue of Michael the Archangel was placed atop the castle in 1753. Travelers visiting Rome in the 1700s made reference to the fireworks display at the castle which apparently took place every year. The castle was decommissioned in 1901 and is now a museum.
