Vintage mid-century prints of Paris views by 20th-century Dutch artist Johannes (Jan) Korthals–history below–framed under glass. The prints are “Rue Geoffroy L’Angevin” [man with umbrella] and “Rue du Chevalier de la Barre Montmartre.” The original prints were likely part of a calendar commissioned for the 2000th anniversary of Paris in 1952 (see history), originally in a larger format, and were cropped to fit these gold and black wooden frames. Overall measurements are 8.25″ square. Excellent preowned vintage condition with new dust covers. Ready to hang.

HISTORY (from online sources): Johannes (Jan) Korthals (Amsterdam, 1916 – 1972) was a Dutch painter who worked in the Impressionist style and was strongly influenced by George Hendrik Breitner and Marie Henri Mackenzie, Dutch painters of landscapes and cityscapes. The latter was Korthals’s uncle and played a stimulating role in his life. Korthals’s work includes many cityscapes, particularly of Amsterdam and Paris.  He also frequently worked on commissions to illustrate calendars and other printed matter. In 1952, Paris celebrated its 2,000th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, Senefelder Printing House decided to publish a “Parisian” calendar.  Jan was commissioned to provide the illustrations for this calendar.  He departed for Paris and returned laden with sketches. Twelve typical cityscapes were selected, such as the Eiffel Tower, a street in Montmartre, and the bookstalls on the Quai des Grands Augustins.  Six pages were printed in color and six in black and white.  The calendar was a resounding success, and then-French President Vincent Auriol even sent his congratulations for the beautiful calendar and its magnificent illustrations.  This marked the beginning of the calendar era.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
