Vintage tapestry featuring the Château de Chenonceau, a 16th century castle located in the Loire Valley (see history below). The tapestry is lined in green fabric and features two metal rings in the back for hanging. It measures 11.75″ x 18″ and it’s in excellent preowned condition. Beautifully detailed; excellent quality. It’s likely that it was made in France, although I cannot confirm it; if there are any identifying labels. they would have been sewn into the seams on the inside. HISTORY (from online sources): Château de Chenonceau is a French château spanning the river Cher, near the small village of Chenonceaux, Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire. It’s one of the best-known châteaux of the Loire Valley. The estate of Chenonceau is first mentioned in writing in the 11th century. The current château was built in 1514–1522 on the foundations of an old mill and was later extended to span the river. The bridge over the river was built (1556–1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l’Orme, and the gallery on the bridge, built from 1570 to 1576 to designs by Jean Bullant. The medieval keep to the left is the last vestige of the previous château, located in what is now the forecourt, still surrounded by moats. An architectural mixture of late Gothic and early Renaissance, Château de Chenonceau and its gardens are open to the public. Other than the Royal Palace of Versailles, it is the most visited château in France. It has been owned since 1913 by members of the Menier family, of chocolate factory fame.
