Beautiful French of French-style jacquard tapestry for use as a portiere, window curtain, wall hanging or bedspread (twin to queen size). The tapestry is lightweight and feels like Rayon (also called “synthetic silk”), which has been around since 1846, when chemists were looking for a new way to use explosives, but accidentally invented Rayon instead. It features a 4″ fringe on three sides and an array of cherubs, musical instruments, fountains, birds, flowers, torches, swags, a central sun motif, and geometric designs, all in lovely shades of gold, blue, green, pink and purple. See photos for how colors change from front to back. I was unable to find a mark, but both the motifs and style are very French. It’s an old piece–I was unable to find any others like it–and it has a few signs of age and previous use–see below for measurements and condition. I’ve pictured it as a portiere and as a bedspread on a queen-size bed. It would also make a statement as a single-window curtain, a wall hanging, or draped over a banister. Sourced from an estate sale at a Victorian house where everything was from the 1800s to early 1900s.

MEASUREMENTS: 80″ x 89″ including a 4″ fringe on three sides
CONDITION: Good vintage to antique condition with signs of age and previous use. There are several red spots which may be candle wax (it may have been used as a tablecloth) or ink, the largest being about 1/5″ in diameter. There are a few small holes, the largest being 1″ x .5″. Due to the colorful and busy pattern, none of these are readily visible.
