Antique Print of “Hope” by George Frederic Watts Late 1800s – Early 1900s 16.75″ x 12.75″

$135.00

Hauntingly beautiful print of George Frederic Watts’ ( 1817 – 1904) 1886 painting entitled “Hope” (or “blind hope”).  It depicts a blindfolded young woman sitting on a globe and playing a lyre whose strings are broken, except for one.  Watts painted two versions of this work, and I believe this print represents the first version, which includes a star at the top of the picture and was omitted from the second version–see history below.  This appears to be a lithographic print (no visible pixelation).  Printed by The Hughes & Lyday Co.  Beautiful muted colors enhance the mood.  Framed under glass in period frame.  See below for measurements and condition.  Fabulous addition to the gallery wall, although I believe this piece deserves to be showcased all on its own.

Product Information

MEASUREMENTS: Overall: 16.75″ x 12.75″  – Image: 15.75″ x 11.75″

CONDITION: Excellent preowned antique condition.  There’s a small water spot near the margin in the upper left.  The backing and hanging hardware are replacements.  Frame and glass intact.

HISTORY (from online sources):  The picture is one of a series of allegorical subjects which Watts intended for a decorative scheme known as the “House of Life.”  “Hope” bends her head to listen to the faint music, but her efforts appear forlorn; the overall atmosphere is one of sadness and desolation rather than hope.  The picture’s sense of melancholy is enhanced by the soft brushwork and the translucent mists that envelop the floating globe.   Several critics argued that Despair would be a more fitting title.  Watts clarified: ‘Hope need not mean expectancy. It suggests here rather the music which can come from the remaining chord.”  Watts painted two versions of “Hope.”  The original is in a private collection and includes a star at the top of the picture.  The second version is softer in execution and the girl wears a more enigmatic expression on her face.  In the second version, Watts also omitted the star–the only note of optimism–at the top of the picture.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
