Vintage pair of Eastlake-style wall display brackets, perfect for showing off favorite curiosities in a narrow space. Each has a center bracket with a curved and rectilinear profile accented with a turned acorn-shaped “dangle” and four small spheres, two on each side. The horizontal pieces are irregular hexagons. The back piece features an incised design and, again, curved and linear edges–history below. Made from hardwood (possibly cherry) and stained a dark brown with slightly reddish undertones, each measures 8.5″ wide x 9″ long x 6-3/9″ deep. Each bracket had previously been nailed through into the wall; small holes remain but aren’t noticeable. There is an old repair on one of the brackets–see photos. Metal hangers are a later addition; recommend replacing them with sawtooth or other flatter hangers. Very good preowned and used vintage to antique condition. NOTE: although the shelves have a plate groove, both have been cut with the lip facing the back and will not safely secure a plate. Use museum wax or other anchoring method to display plates.

HISTORY (from online sources): In furniture, Charles Eastlake (British architect and writer, 1836 – 1906) was particularly fond of oak and cherry wood grains; however, American manufacturers still used ebonized wood despite Eastlake’s suggestions. The forms of the furniture were often rectilinear and had “geometric ornament, turnings, brackets, trestles, and incised linear decoration. Additionally, the designs were easily made by machines. Eastlake also believed that the prices of his furniture should be “as cheap as that which is ugly” as he could not understand why anyone would buy a more expensive piece of furniture for a more intricate design. Eastlake’s furniture was for the middle-class home, and being easy to clean was another one of the characteristics.
