Vintage to antique Eastlake style wall shelf with beveled mirror. It exhibits elements of the Eastlake style, such as spindles, brackets, and incised linear carvings, emphasizing sturdy, practical, and machine-made construction, in reaction against overly ornate Victorian styles (history below). Based on the presence of two metal brackets along the bottom edge on the back, I suspect this shelf was originally attached to a larger piece of furniture, such as a hall tree or hutch. If the brackets are removed, the shelf will sit flat on a tabletop. It measures 18.5″ tall x 13″ wide x 5.5″ deep; mirror measures 8.5″ x 4-5/8″; sawtooth hanger in back. Use it in the mud room or entryway for outgoing mail, car keys, gloves, etc.; in the powder room with a bud vase; or even as an unexpected element on the gallery wall. Excellent preowned vintage to antique condition.

HISTORY (from online sources): The Eastlake style, introduced by architect and furniture designer Charles Eastlake (British, 1836-1906), was a reaction against fussy Rococo/Renaissance Revival styles, though American mass production often complicated his simpler ideals, creating a hybrid “American Eastlake.” The style was designed Designed for machine production, making it more affordable and practical (easy to clean) for the middle class. Key features are strong lines, turned elements, flat surfaces, and decorative wood knobs.
