This framed vintage tapestry features sheep, a shepherdess, and a reclining courting couple set within a bucolic landscape. Reminiscent of the Rococo style of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, whose works convey an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism, this vignette is typical of subjects preferred by the art patrons of Louis XV’s pleasure-seeking and decadent court, where a risqué theme lies just below the surface of a seemingly innocent tableau. Here, the gentleman sweetly offers a flower to a sheep (symbol of purity and innocence) while leaning into the back of the seated woman and eyeing her reaction (she doesn’t seem to mind). The shepherdess observes with a side glance conveying scorn or disapproval. The colors are soft greens, blues, pinks and tans, and the details add dimension, interest and movement. The wooden frame has a green and gilded finish with red peeking through. The tapestry measures 17.5″ x 20.5″ overall and is in excellent preowned vintage condition. The dust cover shows some wear; original hanging wire is present. Ca. 1960s – 1970s. Great addition to a French-inspired or cottage-style interior.
