Superb Asian hand painted storage chest with peacock and flower motif on custom wooden stand. The chest is made of wood, the exterior covered in vellum (animal hide/pig skin), and the interior lined with a muslin-type fabric. There are two substantial brass handles with aged patina, one on each side, and an etched brass hasp in front (a replacement). Beautiful colors with gold accents. Flowering branches, Japanese Magnolia and Camellia blossoms, and the peacock’s train painted against a black background flow uninterrupted from the lid onto the sides of the chest. We believe the chest was made in Japan (possibly China) between the 1920s to 1960s. The custom-made black wooden stand is a much later addition. Use for storing lightweight items, as the inspiration piece for an eclectic space, or as a side table. MEASUREMENTS: chest: 18″ side to side x 11″ front to back x 8″ top to bottom – placed on stand: 22.5″ tall
CONDITION: Very good used vintage condition with wear consistent with age. Interior fabric has darkened over time and shows age. The exterior shows shelf wear, scuffs and some loss of paint, particularly along the edges. However, there’s nothing that detracts. Both the chest and stand are sturdy.
