Heavy. ATALA is the secondary character in an early novella, first published on April 2, 1801, by French author François-René de Chateaubriand. Typewriter note on bottom reads: “Heroine of ___?____’s romance, an Indian maiden in love with Chaftas, the captive chief of another tribe. She releases and flees with him but, faithful to her Chi___n (?) vows, poisons herself in despair.”
