This set of Old Paris style coffee pot or teapot and separate underplate is part of a larger set (various items listed separately–see list below) from an estate whose owner received the set as a wedding gift in the 1920s. Lovely classic shapes with gold trim and a band in the iconic green associated with Old Paris china–no worries, though: the original Paris Green, which contained arsenic, was discontinued at the end of the 19th century. Some of the pieces in the set aren’t marked; on others the mark is very faint; where legible, it reads H&Co (Haviland & Company [Limoges, France]; later Haviland SA–see history below). THIS LISTING: Lidded coffee or teapot (8″ tall x 9.5: spout to handle) with separate underplate (7 3/8″ diameter); capacity: 6+ cups. No visible marks. The teapot has built in strainer holes inside and the lid has an inner stop that keeps it in place when pouring. Lovely beaded details on finial and thumbpiece. Very good used antique condition; minor wear to the gold; teapot has a touchup at the top of the spout (the cutout at the bottom of the spout may be a “repair” to a chip), make-do repairs along the underside edge, a nick on the lid’s stop, as well as a tiny black (or gold) spot original to the piece; priced accordingly.

HISTORY (from online sources): Haviland & Co. was started in 1840 in Limoges, France, not by Frenchmen but by the American Haviland family, importers of porcelain to the US, which has always been its main market. Its finest period was during the late 19th century–a set of china was produced for the Lincoln White House. The company is still run by members of the Haviland family.
