Antique 1922 Trumeau-Style Mirror with Print of Canaletto’s “Piazza San Marco” 30″ x 7-5/8″

$110.00

Antique trumeau-style mirror with print of Giovanni Antonio Canal’s (“Canaletto” – Venetian, 1697 – 1768) “Piazza San Marco” in Venice, completed between 1742 and 1744.  The mirror is stamped “P.P.G. & Co. Jan. 1922″ (history below).   The commercially-produced print is a replacement and dates from the mid 20th century; lovely muted colors with an aged look.  The antique mirror, built on a wooden frame, has a stippled design and an applied ornate crown featuring scrolls and florals.  The mirror is heavy and thick, measuring 1/4″ thick.  Overall measurements are 30″ x 7-5/8″; the mirror area is 17-5/8″ x 5-5/8″ and the print area is 7-5/8″ x 5-5/8”.  Very good preowned antique condition with a couple of areas of missing silver on the mirror, a nick on the underside in the upper left corner of the mirror, and missing tip of the crown at the very top.  None of these detracts–see photos.  New backing; ready to hang.   Great piece for European-inspired interiors and the perfect size for those hard-to-style narrow walls.

NOTE: The red line running across the print is one of three ship’s masts symbolizing Venice’s conquered territories (Cyprus, Crete, Peloponnese) and later repurposed to represent Freedom, Virtue, and Equality, flying the Venetian, Italian and European flags.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources): A “trumeau” is a section of wall or a pillar between two openings, especially a pillar dividing a large doorway in a church.  Trumeau mirrors originated in France in the late 18th century and were originally set into frames on narrow walls, typically between two windows or two doors, generally to capture and reflect additional light into the room.  Also used above fireplace mantels, they were characterized by decorative carved or painted scenes in the top section.
Pittsburg Plate & Glass Co. was founded in 1883 and soon became the United States’ first commercially successful producer of high-quality, thick flat glass using the plate process.  PPG was also the world’s first plate glass plant to power its furnaces with locally produced natural gas, an innovation which rapidly stimulated widespread industrial use of the cleaner-burning fuel.  By 1900, known as the “Glass Trust,” it included 10 plants, had a 65 percent share of the U.S. plate glass market, and had become the nation’s second largest producer of paint.  Today, known as PPG Industries, the company is a multibillion-dollar Fortune 500 corporation with 150 manufacturing locations around the world, producing coatings, glass, fiberglass, and other chemicals.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
