Vintage gilded bookends by Borghese featuring a classically-inspired acanthus leaf motif on a stepped plinth. The bookends are made of plaster and painted with highlights and lowlights to look like antiques. They measure approx. 6.25″ tall x 4-5/8″ wide x 5-1/8″ deep. They have black felt coverings on the underside and one retains the Borghese label (see history below). Excellent used vintage condition.

HISTORY (from online sources): European inspired, Borghese figurines and decorative items were manufactured in the USA by Niepold’s, Inc., of Gaithersburg, Maryland, starting in the early 1900s, continuing until the early 1970s, and distributed to dealers throughout the United States by Charles Hall, Inc. They are made of cast plaster, also known as chalkware or plaster of Paris, and often painted to look like antiques with shading techniques to imitate wear from aging. They are not Italian, but they certainly have “the look.”

I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS!
