Product Information

SUMMARY from dust jacket: From the jacket: It was called le Bateau-Lavoirโ€”โ€œthe washing boatโ€โ€”an unprepossessing, broken-down house in Parisโ€™ Montmartre. . . . This ramshackle wooden structure was the home and meeting place of the most exciting and influential artists of Paris โ€” Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Kees van Dongen, George Braque, Henri Matisse, and many others. There Picasso painted Les Demoiselles dโ€™Avignon, which many critics consider to be his greatest and most important painting. There, in innumerable discussions and debates, cubism was born and developed. And le Bateau-Lavoirโ€™s doors opened to more than visual artists. The poets and writers of Paris โ€” Jean Cocteau, Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob โ€” gathered there, too, to discuss the literary and artistic currents of the time. . . . In recalling the time, Janine Warnod not only entertains, but reminds us of the centrality of Paris in the development of modern art and of the intimacy of the group that through backbiting and admiration, rivalry and assistance, pulled art into the twentieth century. Le Bateau-Lavoir had fallen into disrepair, although many artists still lived and worked there, when the city of Paris bought it in December 1969. Five months later, the century-old dwelling burned to the ground. Fortunately, dozens of photographs and documents survived elsewhere and are reproduced in this book, helping to recreate vividly the life of the house and of the tumultuous era it symbolized.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
