I believe this is the oldest piece of art I’ve ever come across.ย It’s a ca. 1749 “etching and engraving on laid paper” depicting a view of the market square of Brussels, where members of the Council of State are led away by guards on 5 September 1576, engraved by Simon Fokke (see history below).ย The engraving, hand colored and entitled “De Raad van Staate, te Brusfel, in Hegtenis Genomen, in ‘t Jaar 1576” (The Council of State in Brussels, Taken into Custody in the Year 1576), shows plate marks on all sides, although the mat is obscuring the top and bottom marks.ย It also shows vertical fold marks and evidence of previous binding on the left margin (under the mat), consistent with this piece having been bound in the 1749 – 1759 book Histories of the United Netherlands–see history below.ย At the top right corner we see “Pag. 104,” further evidence that this piece had been bound in a book at some point.ย Another copy of the print is at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.ย I purchased this from a collector’s estate.ย Handwritten in pencil on the back is “[Atlanta] High Museum [of Art] (L) 1950, but I don’t know what this refers to, and we’ll never know.ย Overall measurements including mat: 12″ x 14″.ย Image within plate marks: about 7.5″ x 8.5”.ย The mat is in poor condition.ย The print shows its age and I love the authenticity of it.ย It’s in overall good condition, worthy of sticking around for another 275 years!ย It would be a wonderful project to have it professionally matted and framed in order to further preserve it.ย Great gift for a collector of Dutch art and/or fan of Dutch/Belgian history.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
