This is such a special piece–a handcrafted miniature replica of a Georgian-style knife or cutlery box like those seen in affluent homes of the 18th and early 19th centuries, with the craftsmanship and proportions reflecting the same refined aesthetic as its larger counterparts.
The front, sides and sloped lid were made from a single piece of wood; the back and bottom, including the sloped interior bottom, were crafted separately. Notice that the woodgrain flows from the bottom section of the box to the edges of the lid. The tree’s growth rings are visible on both sides of the lid (I count approx. 23) and on the inner lip of the bottom section of the box–see photos and use zoom. The exterior surface has aged beautifully, exhibiting a warm patina with naturally-occurring scarring and some alligatored areas on the varnish. The top of the lid shows rough areas that could be part of the tree’s original bark or perhaps sap that leached out at some point. The interior was only partially stained and varnished, indicating that perhaps the box originally featured an insert, just like the full-size examples it was patterned after. This piece may have been made as a salesman’s sample or as a practice piece by a cabinetmaker’s apprentice; another possibility is that it was simply a decorative item or desk accessory, which would have been popular during the Victorian era and Colonial Revival period. It’s difficult to pinpoint a date when the box was made, but the craftsmanship and softly aged patina suggests that it may qualify as an antique. Use it strictly for shelf styling, or to hold spoons and forks on a dessert buffet, or pens and pencils on the home office desk.
