Beautiful vintage bride’s basket made by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut (history below). The basket has lovely details, including a ruffled rim with embossed flower basket detail and other foliate and scroll designs, as well as two rows of filigree openwork along the rim and base. The handle features scrolls and foliate designs. The underside is stamped “SHM&Co. G3216 Sheffield Reproduction in the Sheraton Period Pat’d 1917″ and includes other symbols used by SHM&Co.–see photos. Overall measurements are 16″ tall to the tip of the handle x 11.75″ wide at the widest point (bottom of handle); diameter at the rim is 9-7/8”. Very good used vintage condition with color variations, some loss of plating, and wear consistent with age and prior use.

HISTORY (from online sources): Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. was a cutlery and silver hollowware manufacturer in Wallingford, Connecticut, founded in 1866. By c. 1895, the company operated large factories in Wallingford and Montreal Canada. In 1898, SHM&Co. became part of the International Silver Company headquartered in neighboring Meriden. Many designs have been collected by many American museums including the Dallas Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Yale University Art Gallery. In 2005-07, Modernist silver designs by SHM&Co. were featured in a traveling museum exhibition (Dallas, Washington, Miami Beach, Reno and Memphis). The designs have been exhibited since the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. In 1880-81, SHM&Co. was awarded the First Prize Medal competing with 44 other silver manufacturers from the United States and Europe at the Melbourne International Exhibition in Australia. The International Silver Company Connecticut plant closed in 1981 and liquidation was completed in 1983.
