Vintage heavy cast metal crucifix from the year 2000 Peace Jubilee. Highly detailed relief work, featuring Christ on the cross on the front with Mary and John on either side; God the Father and the Holy Spirit as the dove of peace above; Rome’s four basilicas: St. Peter’s at the top, St. John Lateran at the bottom, St. Mary Major on the right, and St. Paul Outside the Walls on the Left, all of which play a role during pilgrimages of jubilee year. The back features the words Jubilaeum Pacis (Peace Jubilee), the theme proclaimed by Pope John Paul II for the year 2000 at the top; the Greek letters Alpha and Omega on the left and right, respectively. In the center there is a detailed image of Christ with a victory banner rising above the Holy Doors which are opened by the Pope to mark the jubilee celebration; and below it the Latin inscription: Ecce Agnus Dei: ecce qui tollit peccata mundi. Indulgentiam, absolutionem et remissionem peccatorum nostrorum, tribuat nobis omnipotens et misericors Dominus. (Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world. May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of our sins.) The words Mod. Dep. (Modello Depositato), an Italian copyright or patent. The cross may be made of pewter and is plated with a silver-color metal and gold-color accents on the front. I’ve added a ribbon for hanging. It measures 6-3/8″ x 4.25″ and is in excellent preowned vintage condition. It’s a beautiful piece, likely obtained in Rome during the 2000 Jubilee and holds great significance for those of the Catholic faith. Style it on a book or a Bible on the coffee table or nightstand; gift it to a special someone.
