Vintage porcelain wall plate with a monochromatic depiction of the “Porta Nigra” in Trier, Germany (see history below) in a beautiful russet color. The plate is marked “West Germany” and includes the Fürstenberg maker’s mark–the second-oldest German china producer. The vignette suggests a late 19th century scene and includes a group of soldiers on horseback passing through the gate. An unruly horse pulling a cannon is being disciplined. On the far right, a farmer and his family arrange a load on their wagon. Bystanders take in the proceedings. The plate has a hanger on the back (for security, I prefer using a traditional spring-loaded hanger or displaying plates on an easel). The plate measures 9.5″ in diameter and is in excellent preowned vintage condition with no chips or cracks.

HISTORY (from online sources): The Porta Nigra, referred to by locals as Porta, is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name Porta Nigra originated in the Middle Ages due to the darkened color of its stone; the original Roman name has not been preserved.
