Our research took us to 1856 Glasgow, Scotland, where the book Italy: Classical, Historical, and Picturesque, Illustrated in a Series of Views, was published by Blackie and Son. The 164-page English-text book was profusely illustrated throughout with “63 excellent full-page steel engraved views [of Italy], all printed on heavy paper with tissue guards. Full leather binding, raised bands, gilt title lettering, gilt ruled compartments and covers, marbled end paper, all edges gilt. A monumental work with splendid plates, all engraved to the highest technical level, well printed with nuanced range of darks and lights, all signed in the plates by various engravers” [from internet source]. The monochromatic views were drawn by different artists, and as the above text indicates, engraved by different engravers. The original book measured 13.5″ x 10″.
The prints offered here are 20th-century color versions of two of the images, printed by Grafiche Tassotti, renowned printers in Bassano, Italy, and since 1957 successors to Remondini Printers which had been in business for over 200 years beginning in 1657.
1. Pisa, engraved by J. T. Willmore, A.E., features a river scene (probably on the Arno which flows east into Florence) with ancient buildings, a tower, a bridge and people going about their tasks along the water. Inconspicuously in the very far distance we can see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
2. Venice, engraved by T. Higham, features the Grand Canal, lots of activity by people and boats on the water and along the shore. Part of Rialto Bridge can be seen in the distance on the left.
Both frames are made of carved wood with a gilt finish. The tasteful mats are forest green with gold metal edging; the hanging wires are original and the dust covers are new. Overall measurements are 13.5″ x 12″ x 1 1/8″ (thick), and the visible area of the prints measures 7 7/8″ x 6 3/8″.  Excellent preowned vintage condition; the Pisa frame has a scuff along the top edge that isn’t visible when hung and can be easily touched up if so desired.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
