Vintage artisan-crafted European hunter’s cap made from the Amadou mushroom–history below. The hat is decorated with natural motifs (leaves, a pine trees, and an elk), which align with Central European forest culture. This charming and unique hat is soft and pliable (like sueded animal skins) and measures 21.5″ in circumference with a 13″ crown and 2″ bill. It’s in remarkably good condition with only minor wear consistent with age. Irregularities consistent with the nature of the material are also present and not considered flaws.

HISTORY (from online sources): Amadou is a spongy, fibrous material derived from the tinder fungus, scientifically known as Fomes fomentarius. This fungus typically grows on dead or decaying hardwood trees, particularly birch and beech. The inner layer of the fungus, called the trama, is processed and used to make a soft, pliable felt-like material. Traditionally, amadou was used as tinder. Treated with potassium nitrate, it easily catches a spark—this was vital before matches were common. Particularly in Transylvania, Hungary, Romania, and parts of Austria, amadou has been crafted into various items, such as hats, wallets, pouches and decorative items. Making a hat from amadou is a skilled craft. The fungus must be harvested, softened (often boiled and beaten), and layered until it reaches a felt-like consistency that can be molded. Hats are lightweight, breathable, and naturally resistant to rot and pests. They’re a rare and sustainable item, often made by artisans and tied to rural traditions in Eastern and Central Europe.
