Rare and exceptional:
Antique books (1905), RUSSIA. Descriptive & Illustrative by Theophile Gautier and by other distinguished French travelers and writers of note [Marius Vachon, Jules Legras, L. Leger, E. M. de Vogue, Gustave Lejeal, Desire Lacroix, etc.], translated from the French by Florence MacIntyre Tyson, illustrated with photogravures, in two volumes, The International Press, The John C. Winston Co., Philadelphia.
The books include Gautier’s 1858 – 1859 travels from France through Germany and on to Russia, as well other French writers’ later observations and analyses of Russian art, architecture, literature, religion, as well as a chapter by the translator dealing with the geopolitical situation in the Far East during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 – 1905–the period when the books were publishe.ย There are chapters on St. Petersburg, Moscow, Siberia, various landmarks, as well as “interesting social considerations of Nicholas II’s Russia, such as ‘The Press and Censorship’, ‘Literature’, ‘Russian Art’ and ‘The Tea Kingdom’.”ย In both words and images, the books present a unique glimpse into mid-19th-century Russia (during Gautier’s travels) and the changing climate of the late 1800s and turn of the 19th century and can be classified both as travelogue and socio-political treatise.ย Fascinating.
Each book, bound in red cloth with gold lettering and spectacular renditions of the Romanov eagle crest in gold, is protected by a cloth/paper dust jacket and measures 8-1/8″ x 5.5″ x 1-3/8″.ย Each has a red silk bookmark, 25 photogravures dating from the time of publication (landmarks, art, architecture, daily life) with printed tissue guards.ย Vol. 1: 483 pgs.; Vol. 2: 461 pgs.ย Inscribed “Emma F. Klapp, 1716 Spruce Street, Christmas 1905.”
The set is in superb antique condition–from visual observation.ย There’s some slight separation in Vol. 1 of the front cover from facing page about 1″ long; bookmarks are detached; and dust covers show some minor wear.
Excellent addition to the the “old-Russia” enthusiast’s library.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
