Antique chess/checkers game board in the shape of two large books, originally also designed for backgammon. The “books” are made of wood covered with what appears to be hand-painted paper. The “spines” have embossed designs and labels resembling book titles–most of it illegible but perhaps spelling “evenings at home.” When opened flat, the interior reveals a painted-over backgammon board where faint outlines of the game board can still be seen. Game pieces would have been stored inside. The two “volumes” would have been hinged together at the back (side opposite to spine). Remnants of a tape “hinge” are visible. The game board is very distressed from age and prior use–see photos; it could be clear coated to prevent further deterioration. As is it still makes a fantastic backdrop for coffee table styling. Overall measurements are 16.75″ x 9-1/8″ x 3.5″ thick measured together and 1.75″ thick measured individually.
