Vintage early 20th century prints of charming kittens and puppy by Bernard Cobbe (British, 1846 – ??).ย The prints, professionally framed in England, are set into heavy/sturdy oak frames with an interesting matting technique: a standard gold mat surrounds the black-and-white image and is overlayed with a wooden gold border under glass.ย The images are typical of late Victorian popular art and were widely used on postcards.ย Both signed “B. Cobbe” and one includes the word “Oilette” and the logo of Raphael Tuck & Sons (see history below).ย ย Charming addition to a nursery or playroom.ย Ready to hang.ย The previous owners acquired these in England, where they spent a large part of their working lives.ย ย $9.99 flat rate shipping for street addresses within contiguous United States.

HISTORY (from online sources):ย Both images are signed B. Cobbe, and one includes “Oilette” and the logo of Raphael Tuck & Sons.ย Not much is known about the artist, other than he was active between 1868 and 1883 and his work was exhibited between 1883 and 1885.ย “Oilette” is a term coined by Raphael Tuck & Sons, a London printing house who can be credited with the “invention” of the postcard and the tradition of sending Christmas cards and later other greeting cards.ย ย Oilette, Oilfacsim[ile], water colour, and carbonette were terms used in Tuck’s postcard catalogs describing “the perfection of picture postcards, used by royalty, society and the great public.”ย The range of images used on their postcards included charming animal themes, as well as landscapes and buildings from literally across the world.ย Their marketing strategies were pure genius: competitions with huge cash prizes for the person with the largest collection of postcards.ย The first contest winner, in 1900, turned in a collection of 20,364 cards over the 18-month duration of the contest.ย The firm, started in 1866, was heavily bombed during the blitz of 1940 and the building, along with records of 74 years and more than 40,000 original pictures and photographs, were completely destroyed.ย The company started over but never fully recovered, and in 1959 combined with two other printers to become the British Printing Corporation.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
