Vintage pressed flowers from the Holy Land framed under glass in a reeded wooden frame with rosette corner accents. The flowers appear in three sections captioned “Bethlehem,” “Tomb of David,” and “Mt. of Offence.” See history below. Each section features a collection of tiny flowers, beautifully arranged to form a star, a crown and a wreath. The captions are written in black ink in Gothic script. I’ve been unable to determine the date of this piece; the pressed flowers are set into three separate cards and they appear to be older than the framing. I estimate that the cards were travel souvenirs, perhaps from the mid-1900s or earlier, and framed later. The dust cover is a replacement. Overall measurements are 26-3/8″ x 10-3/8″. Very good preowned vintage condition with some foxing consistent with age.

HISTORY (from online sources): Bethlehem is a city in the West Bank, Palestine. The city’s economy is strongly linked to tourism, especially during the Christmas period, when Christians embark on a pilgrimage to the Church of the Nativity, which is revered as the location of the birth of Jesus.
King David’s Tomb is a site that, according to an early medieval (9th century) tradition, is associated with the burial of the biblical king David. During the Ottoman and British Mandate periods, Maqam Al-Nabi Daoud served one of Jerusalem prime Islamic shrines. The building is now administered by the Diaspora Yeshiva Jewish seminary group. Historians, archaeologists and Jewish religious authorities do not consider the site to be the actual resting place of King David. The compound is located on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, near the Christian Abbey of the Dormition.
The Mount of Offence (or Corruption) is a traditional name for a southern spur of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, named from the Bible (1 Kings 11:7, 2 Kings 23:13), where King Solomon built high places for foreign gods, symbolizing idolatry and turning away from God. It’s considered a site of historical apostasy, contrasting with the Mount of Olives’ more sacred associations, and represents spiritual pitfalls and disobedience, according to biblical tradition.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
