Antique French engraving from the 19th century design reference book “Ornaments, Vases and Decorations After the Masters,” 7th Vol., 1863 by Auguste Péguénot (1819 – 1878) (last image) in a French-style gilt frame. Péguénot’s book features a collection of engraved plates of historical decorative art motifs for use by artists, designers, and artisans and serves as a visual sourcebook of esteemed historical designs. It typically includes numerous plates showcasing various styles of ornaments, vases, and decorative elements. These illustrations are derived from the works of celebrated “masters” of the past, spanning different historical periods and artistic movements. The purpose of such publications in the 19th century was to provide practical examples and inspiration for contemporary decorative arts, allowing artisans to study and replicate established design principles. The engravings were created by Péguénot after paintings by French artists and each bears Péguénot’s name identified as the engraver, the plate marks, the printer’s information and, on occasion, the artist’s name, as well as a plate number.
The engraving offered here has been framed under glass in a vintage to antique gesso-on-wood frame with gilt finish featuring swags of roses surmounted by a pediment and urn or basket of flowers. The image is an urn with face handles and floral swags which reference the ornamentation on the frame; plate marks are plainly visible. The background color is a buff tone, rather than yellowish as it’s reading in some of the images. Overall measurements are 10.5″ x 7-3/8″. The wire hanger and dust cover are replacements; a copy of the book’s title page is pasted to the back. Beautiful addition to a French-inspired gallery wall.
