Set of six (6) vintage animal napkin rings hand carved in Appalachia. These are typical of folk arts practiced by the Cherokee people of Western North Carolina whose self-taught traditions in whittling, pottery, quilt making, etc., have been passed down through the generations. Initially strictly utilitarian and later sold as souvenirs providing a source of income, these one-of-a-kind items are an integral part of this country’s indigenous heritage and have become very collectible. I find it interesting that among the expected farm and domestic animals, the carver included an elephant, and I have to wonder where he found his or her inspiration. Likely made of walnut, they have a lovely warm patina. They range in size from 3.5″ to 1-7/8″ tall x 3″ to 2-7/8″ wide, marked with the initial “D”–presumably the carver’s–and are in excellent preowned vintage condition. Great addition to a collection of American folk art.
