Vintage to antique framed book plate prints featuring engravings of Catherine of Braganza and the Duchess of Richmond [Frances Teresa Stewart] after portraits by Sir Peter Lely painted in the 1660s. Catherine’s portrait was engraved by B. Holl and Frances’ by S. Freeman in the 19th century. Frances is depicted holding a bow, a reference to Diana the Huntress. Both engravings were included in the book MEMOIRS OF THE BEAUTIES OF THE COURT OF CHARLES THE SECOND originally published in the 1830s–see history below. The prints offered here likely come from a later edition of the book, as they are printed on glossy paper which wasn’t developed until the 1880s – 1890s. I refer to them as “vintage to antique” since I don’t know the publication date of the books in which these particular prints appeared. They are framed under glass and buff, gold edged-mats in ornate gold frames from the last quarter of the 20th century, with new dust covers. Overall measurements are 15-3/8″ x 13-3/8″. Excellent preowned vintage/antique condition. Note that Catherine’s portrait shows some foxing along the left margin.

HISTORY (from online sources):
Catherine of Braganza (b. 1638 Portugal – d. 1705) was Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland during her marriage to King Charles II, which lasted from 1662 until his death in 1685. She is often credited with the custom of drinking tea in England.
Frances Teresa Stewart (b. 1647 Paris – d. 1702 Denmark), Duchess of Richmond and Lennox, was a prominent member of the Court of the Restoration and famous for refusing to become a mistress of Charles II of England. For her great beauty she was known as La Belle Stuart, was included in the series “The Windsor Beauties” painted by Sir Peter Lely, and served as the model for an idealized female Britannia.
Sir Peter Lely (1618 – 1680) was a painter of Dutch origin whose career was nearly all spent in England, where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court. He became a naturalized British subject and was knighted in 1679.
Samuel Freeman (1773–1857) was an English engraver who worked chiefly in stipple and is principally known as an engraver of portraits.
William Holl the Younger [B. Holl] (1807 – 1871) was a British portrait and figure engraver, using particularly the stipple engraving technique, and noted for his book illustrations.
MEMOIRS OF THE BEAUTIES OF THE COURT OF CHARLES THE SECOND WITH THEIR PORTRAITS AFTER SIR PETER LELY AND OTHER EMINENT PAINTERS by Mrs. [Anna] Jameson (1794 – 1860) was first published ca. 1838.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
