Vintage to Antique Engraving Entitled A View of the East Side of Athens During Emperor Hadrian’s Era by J Buhlmann 16″ x 12″

$85.00

This engraving is a famous depiction of Athens during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian, ca. 130 AD, specifically focusing on the city’s east side, as envisioned by the artist J. Buhlmann (Swiss-German architect, 1844 –  1921).  This artwork offers a reconstructive vision of Athens during this era, showing the River Ilissos in the foreground; the newly-completed Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympeion) in the center-left; and the Parthenon on the Acropolis in the top right.  The original engraving was likely created in the 19th century and provides a valuable glimpse into how artists interpreted and depicted ancient Athens during this period in history.  Hadrian is recognized for his significant architectural contributions to Athens, including the completion of the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the creation of a new city quarter, referred to as Hadrianopolis.  The artwork by Buhlmann helps to visualize these developments, offering a perspective from the east side of the city.  This print from the early 20th century with new mat measures 16″ x 12″ overall; the image measures 11″ x 7.75″.  Buhlmann’s name appears in the bottom right corner within the print (signed on the plate); on the bottom left corner there are some illegible characters, as well as the word “Stuttgart”–perhaps where the printing house was located.  The print includes a legend in English, French and German.  Ready for display on an easel or in a fame of your choice.

Excellent vintage to antique condition with new mat.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources): Emperor Hadrian (26 AD – 138 AD), a fervent admirer of Greek culture, left a significant architectural legacy in Athens during his reign (117-138 AD).  If you were to view the east side of Athens during this era, you would witness a landscape transformed by his ambitious building program, characterized by a fusion of Roman and Greek styles.  Key features are (1)

  • The Arch of Hadrian: a monumental gateway marking a symbolic transition point. One inscription on its eastern side reads “This is the city of Hadrian, and not of Theseus,” referencing the ancient legendary founder and Hadrian’s role in the city’s renewal. This arch would have framed views of the newly developed eastern quarter, which was expanded by Hadrian.
  • The Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympieion): A colossal temple dedicated to Zeus, completed by Hadrian. This enormous structure would have dominated the eastern horizon, signifying a major achievement for the city and Hadrian’s devotion to its revitalization.
  • The Hadrianic Baths: A large bath complex located north of the Olympieion, showcasing Roman architectural style and lavish amenities like mosaic floors.
  • The Library of Hadrian: An expansive complex containing not only a library but also reading rooms and lecture halls, representing Hadrian’s commitment to learning and intellectual pursuits.
  • The Pantheon: A sanctuary dedicated to all the gods, adding to the spiritual landscape of Hadrian’s Athens.
  • The Hadrianic Aqueduct: This significant infrastructure project, transporting water from Mount Parnes, greatly improved the city’s water supply and quality of life for its residents.
In essence, a view of eastern Athens during Hadrian’s era would reveal a vibrant and expanding urban area, characterized by the imposing presence of new Roman-inspired structures alongside existing classical Greek landmarks. The grand scale of Hadrian’s projects like the Olympieion would highlight the prosperity and cultural renewal experienced by Athens under his patronage.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
