The figurines have lovely colorful finishes, clean paint lines, clear facial and other features, and the names spelled in script on the base in a metallic copper color. Both are in excellent preowned vintage condition with crazing but no chips or cracks. Marked “Staffordshire, Made in England.” Grace measures 5.25″ tall x 2 5/8″ across at the base; Morris measures 4 7/8″ tall x 3.5″ across at the base. NOTE: We believe these are 20th century figurines; however, we are not Staffordshire experts and cannot pinpoint a time period when they were issued. See history below.
HISTORY (from online sources): William Gilbert Grace (1848 – 1915) was an English amateur cricketer who was important in the development of the sport and is widely considered one of its greatest players. He played first-class cricket for a record-equaling 44 seasons, from 1865 to 1908, during which he captained England, Gloucestershire, the Gentlemen, Marleybone Cricket Club, the United Sooth of England Eleven, and several other teams.
Thomas Mitchell Morris (1821 – 1908), otherwise known as Old Tom Morris, and The Grand Old Man of Golf, was a Scottish golfer. He was born in St. Andrews, Fife, the “home of golf” and location of the St. Andrews Links, and died there as well. Young Tom Morris (died 1875), also a golfer, was his son.
