Vintage Prints after Herta Czoernig-Gobanz’s Etchings of Franz Schubert’s and Hugo Wolf’s Houses

$115.00

Vintage prints after Herta Czoernig-Gobanz’s etchings of the houses of Austrian composers Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf (history below). I’m not sure what printing technique was used here.  There are faint plate marks on the prints; what looks like pencil writing is actually printed; and the original images have been cropped.  Nevertheless, they are charming street scenes from Vienna (Schubert’s house) and Perchtoldsdorf (Wolf’s house).

– framed under glass in black and gold wooden frames
– 11.5” x 10” overall
– originally “styled and manufactured” by Andres, Inc., New York (newer dust covers)

Great addition to the gallery wall, music room, or classical music lover gift.

Product Information

HISTORY (from online sources): Herta Czoernig-Gobanz (Austrian, 1886 – 1970) mainly created etchings (about 500), which she usually reproduced herself in strenuous work.  Her focus was predominantly on topographical and architectural motifs, among which the views of Austrian (and also German) musicians’ houses are particularly outstanding.  She managed to capture the atmosphere of these sites and usually underlined their special significance with an appropriate musical quotation.  The composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who changed his apartments rather frequently, is particularly often represented. It is difficult to date these etchings precisely; they can probably be assigned mainly to the last two decades of her creative work.

Franz Peter Schubert (1797 – 1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short life, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music.

Hugo Philipp Jacob Wolf (1860 – 1903) was an Austrian composer, particularly noted for his art songs, or Lieder. He brought to this form a concentrated expressive intensity which was unique in late Romantic music, somewhat related to that of the Second Viennese School. Though he had several bursts of extraordinary productivity, particularly in 1888 and 1889, depression frequently interrupted his creative periods, and his last composition was written in 1898, before he suffered a mental collapse.

    Wonderful experience, meticulous packaging!

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
