Two mini prints of Ernst Geissendorfer’s etchings featuring landmarks in the medieval city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Germany. One is framed horizontally and depicts “Markusturm” (St. Mark’s Tower) and the other is framed vertically, depicting “Das Rodertor” (the harvester gate). Each print is framed under glass in a wooden gold frame; one has a triangle hanger attached to the back and the other a gold eyelet attached to the top edge. The originals these were duplicated from were marked “Original Radierung” (“original etching”) and included the artist’s signature, both features having been reproduced here. The rosette pattern seen under magnification (last image) indicates these are mechanical prints. Each measures 5.5″ x 4.25″ x .5″. Excellent preowned vintage condition, ca. 1960s. Perfect for shelf styling.

HISTORY (from online sources): Ernst Geissendorfer (1908 – 1993) was a German painter and etcher. He studied art techniques in Nuremberg. In the 1930’s he traveled and worked extensively, both in Europe and the United States. At the end of the World War II, Geissendorfer returned to live in his hometown of Rothenburg and assumed control of the family art gallery there. Besides creating many fine works of art, Ernst Geissendorfer served as Town Councillor of Rothenburg during the 1960’s. Before World War II, he usually produced small, uncoloured etchings. After 1950, however, he created much larger etchings to which he applied hand-coloring.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber (“red castle above the Tauber [river]”) is a town in the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. It is well known for its well-preserved medieval old town, a destination for tourists from around the world. It is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany. Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still have completely intact city walls.
