Beautifully framed vintage lithograph print of 16th century European costumes published in Auguste Racinet’s six-volume “Historical Costume: main types of clothing and adornment, compared to those of the interior of the home in all times and among all peoples” (Le costume historique: types principaux du vêtement et de la parure, rapprochis de ceux de l’intérieur de l’habitation dans tous les temps et chez tous les peoples), Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1876 – 1888). See history below.
The featured portraits were originally painted by different artists a few centuries earlier and assembled by Racinet as examples of 16th-century dress and costumes, particularly collars and hairstyles. An entry in the New York Public Library’s Digital Collection identifies the portraits as those of (1) Catherine of Bourbon, 1600; (2) Dutch lady painted by Moreelsen (1571 – 1638); (3) & (4) Marie de Medici (1573 – 1642); (5) Queen Elizabeth of England (1533 – 1603); and (6) Isabelle, wife of Albert of Austria (1566 – 1633) and the lithograph as having been created by Daniel Urrabieta y Vierge (1851 – 1904), Spanish-born French illustrator who revolutionized the reproduction of illustrations.
Printed along the bottom border of the print we find “Europe XVIe siècle — Europa XVIth centy.– Europa XVItes Jahrt” Imp. Fermin Didot et cie. The print appears to be an antique lithograph, although I haven’t examined it outside the frame. Vibrant colors with gold highlights. It’s professionally framed under glass in a lovely gold frame with what appears to be a textured silk mat with a chunky gold border, perhaps metal or wood, creating a shadowbox effect. It measures 19-3/8″ x 15-7/8″ and is ready to hang. Excellent preowned vintage condition. NOTE: the photos show darkened areas in the white space of the print, but in person the color is a uniform buff color. Beautiful addition to a gallery wall or collection of historic costumes.

HISTORY (from online sources): Albert Charles Auguste Racinet was born in France in 1825, the son of a lithographic printer. Following in his father’s artistic footsteps, Racinet attended the famed École des Beaux-Arts, the premier art institution of 19th century Paris. During his time at the academy Racinet studied painting, creating a number of works that would be exhibited in salons from 1849 to 1874. These paintings displayed a characteristic interest in antique art and life, a fascination that would result in Racinet’s most popular work. In 1876, two years after his final exhibition, Racinet’s obsession with the intersection of art, culture, and world history drove him to compile a catalog of various styles of clothing and accessories. Published between 1876 and 1888 as Costume Historique, the six volumes that comprise Racinet’s study span time and globe; they range from the garb of Ancient Greeks and the piercings of the early Americans to the dress of contemporary 19th century Parisians. With over 500 black-and-white and full color plates, Costume Historique is an absolutely invaluable reference for students, designers, artists, illustrators, and historians and remains one of the most extensive studies of costume, dress and style to date.

I purchased two items from this shop. They arrived surprisingly quickly, and it was evident that extreme care was taken to ensure they arrived safely. I greatly appreciate the attention and extra care when packaging up the items. How sad it would be to purchase an antique that has survived multiple generations, only to be destroyed by USPS! Thank you so much for a wonderful shopping experience!
